Our Story

Miller Manhattan Foundation represents seven generations of business owners in Manhattan, New York tracing the "family business" back to the 1700's.  Originally from Hanover, Germany, and arriving to New York in 1746, Miller's ancestors were purchasing agents, land speculators, and importer-exporters dealing in cocoa, wine, rum, and textiles, and the largest fur-trader in the colonies.  They also had a large merchant fleet, and in 1768 were among the founders of the New York Chamber of Commerce.  They also helped finance American’s war for independence (Revolutionary War), and helped establish the Bank of North America in 1781.  Together with their attorney Alexander Hamilton, they helped organize the Bank of New York and become major shareholders.  They also co-founded the Stockbrokers Guild - later the New York Stock exchange.

Our Mission

Miller Manhattan Foundation is a charity supporting a broad range of philanthropic activities.  The Foundation aims effectively to manage and utilize resources entrusted to our non-profit organization. It strives to make thoughtful and prudent philanthropic commitments to highly selective grantee partners. The goal is to invest in opportunities focused on creating and fostering self-reliance along with strong, healthy communities.

The Board of Directors recognizes that achieving its philanthropic aspirations takes time, effort and perseverance that often result in sustained funding relationships.
